Hi everyone, title sounds dramatic i know lol but i really feel this way today!
My lurcher is really loving and friendly but we are having terrible problems with 2 cats that live further down. ( loads of cats in our road and the allotments behind us, but its 2 in particular causing issues).
These 2 cats are always in our garden, and winding up the dogs, when we go outside they end up sitting 2 foot away from our fence and one of my dogs goes nuts. She could easily get them if she reached across the fence but shes a good girl and won't go over fence. BUT im a nervous wreck because they go closer and closer to her.
Ive tried everything i can think of, ice even put spikes, ive used water pistol, a sound thing and allsorts. They are like cats sent from hell??
Im so worried she is going to end up getting one of them, one of them was trying to get in our kitchen window the other day... Its going to end bad i know it!
Any advice or "sympathy" appreciated haha!

I don't suppose speaking to the owners would help?

Can you rig up a sprinkler system, that you could switch on when they are there, directed at them rather than your dogs?

I've seen cat friends recommend something called a Super Soaker - I think it's like a supervised water pistol.

The owners responses were very similar, "they are cats what do you want me to do?" Haha so not particularly helpful!

Cat owners drive me insane. Our last garden had no grass or flower beds because the cat poo was impossible to keep control of.

The only time a cat owner became concerned was actually when my dogs went out into the garden which had a six-foot high fence all the way around and unbeknown to me there was a cat in the garden. Murphy was at the back end of it, George was at the front end of it and it would have just gone tragically wrong had I not been able to get them off the cat as it was George got a really bad scratch to the head which resulted in an infection and I ended up paying nearly 200 euros at the vet to get him treated. When I was talking about this to a neighbor one of the guys piped up that his cat had come home with what looked like a bite wound on its back paw any wondered if it could have come from my dogs? I said I have no idea but if you'd try to keep your cats out of my garden I would appreciate it I got much the same answer the shrug and the well cats will be cats bs.

It is so difficult with cats eh, once they are out of the house it seems some owners relinquish responsibility. An old friend had a retired greyhound with a similar cat problem. This cat used to walk around their garden wall, about 6ft up, totally winding the poor dog up. They told the owners and voiced their concerns for the cat's safety if ever the worst happened which inevitably it did! The cat ended up losing a back leg as the greyhound did get him! He was lucky that was all he lost really... The owners did suck it up as the issue had been spoken about.
I'm wondering if it's worth you speaking to the cat people again, I know they can't stop them coming round but making them aware that you won't be held responsible if the cats slip up and one of your dogs responds like most dogs would in that situation... dogs will be dogs after all!! Avoiding a possible horrific incident would always be preferable of course but not always doable...

Some cat owners are very irresponsible. I suggest getting in one of those companies that specialise in cat-proof fencing. This has wide cylindrical drums on top that are too long for cats to grip and so they cannot get over. It's a nause to have to spend the money because of other people's irresponsibility, but you spend it once and it works for ever after.

You seem to have reached an impasse with the cats’ owners. I suggest that you have every right to give the cats a thorough soaking should they place themselves in a situation which is dangerous for them. You’d be doing it for their protection. With luck, the wind behind you and three Hail Marys the cats will get the message everytime they see you and leg it. Our cat, George, on the very odd occasion has come home soaking - it hasn’t done him any damage.

I think i should do that, il approach it with concern for their cat and make sure that way if anything does happen i can say i had voiced concerns and asked for help. Thank you, its mot an easy one is it.

Its so difficult isn't it, i find people are so quick to complain about a dog for many things and with cats nothing can be done!

Haha this made me laugh, its good to hear from someone who has a cat, because i worry they will think im being cruel but im trying to keep the damn things alive haha

I've had a similar issue as my dogs most of them have a high prey drive and for the sake of the cats I've had to keep them away from my yard as the owners where of no help and blamed myself for having dogs which would hurt the cats.

What I done was to regularly wash the walls and outbuildings with disinfectant to remove any spray from Tom's and for about 3 weeks had to spray the cats with the garden hose and also moved things in the yard to make it harder for them to have cover whilst moving through the yard .

It worked for me but took plenty of perseverance. Best of luck and wishing you lots of patience.
