I still feel it is through the breeding of the wrong "characteristic" dogs and peoples lack of care and training. People don't give a s*** about how their dogs behave or who they hurt just as long as people don't tell them or then you'll get abuse. We're meant to be a nation of animal lovers but I honestly very rarely see any owner who loves and cares for their dog in the correct manner.
I've had many incidents like this, as well as 3 actual contact injuries; staff, lab and GSD respectively. I honestly think it is breed-related, as the vast majority of dog attacks that have happened to friends and people on k9 have been by bull breeds and GSDs. I asked at the vets when ours was being stitched up after the GSD incident, and the reply was yes, these are by far the most common breeds involved in incidents, and the reason is that by their nature they are much harder to socialise than other breeds.

Which is not to say they should be banned, but it should be acknowledged that certain breeds are simply more difficult to accustom to other dogs, and need more experienced handling all round. All dogs may be provoked to snap or bite in certain circumstances of course, but the range of circumstances is much narrower in certain breeds :- " With that in mind, I give them wide berth now; sorry but I'm not prepared to put up with any more unprovoked attacks on my dogs, although we are still happy to socialise with breeds that possess a wider range of canine social skills.

I hope Jan is ok and suffers no ill effects from incident in the future :huggles:

just had a phone call from the police , they are going to see the owner and will get back to me when they have spoken to her

:huggles: Poor Jan. It is a horribly frightening thing to happen. With luck the police may worry the owner enough to make sure that she keeps her dog under proper control.

For similar reasons I carry a walking stick with me every time I go out, sounds awful but some of the morons who have these dogs as status symbols (I don't dislike Staffies only some of the ppl who keep them) dish out violence as a form of discipline so they know what a stick is!

police have just been round , the "lady" has apologised and has been warned the dog has to be on lead at all times when it is not in the house

lets see if it happens  i think it will but hey you never know

Well i think thats something!!!! im surprised the police have done that much!!hopefully the woman will feel a scared now and take more responsability over the dog

Firstly I really feel for you Sharon and poor Jan - I'm really glad you are ok.

Secondly, Jo and I were lucky enough to be brought up with the most wonderful Staffie. She really was the softest, gentlest and most loving dog -with both people and other dogs. She was very well socialised from day one and she saw the arrival of lots of new dogs to the family and adored all of them, she let them do anything to her :huggles:

I know you can never trust a dog 100% but I would have been pretty near to saying I did with Molly.

It is just a case of irreponsible dog ownership, not the dogs - I have no worries about letting my dogs run with SBT's as I have never had a bad experience with one.

THe dogs that I have had bad experiences with -are not your standard 'dangerous' dog. I've been bitten by a Border and our old CKCS wasn't exactly wonderful as well as scary incidents with a Dachsie!

Oh and just to add - I remember an incident where our SBT was attacked by a cat! She just stood there while it mauled her, cutting her eyes etc - the cat had to be dragged off her as she didn't fight back. I know all Staff's aren't like this, but I'd have hated people to think our dog was as awful as the general opinion seems to be :(

i have said all through this that i dont blame the dog , there are wonderfull staffies and evil yorkies lol

i think its because its this "type" of dog thats being hyped up in the media at the moment that has set everyone on edge .

i do think it is wrong to judge a dog because of its breed , any powerfull dog can make a mess of child or animal

I know you have said that Sharon - which I think is really good of you especially after the horrible experience you have.

But some people have expressed some very extreme opinions on this thread, which I find a little blinkered.

Anyway, the most important thing is you are all ok and the police have spoken to the owner who will hopefully be more responsible from now on

my friend has a staffie which we have looked after in the past, she is the most gentle little soul o:)

while in the park with my friend and her staff, she was attacked by a chihuahua of all dogs!!!! she tried to run away, but the dog had her round the neck, horrid little thing it was!!

someone at the other end of the park, started shouting at my friend, as they automaticly though it was her staff attacking the other dog

these dogs have a bad name, but so many of them are loving family pets, its a shame :(

Oh God!!!  I am sorry Sharon that I missed this somehow......poor Jan and Bliss! After having Moss attacked quite badly last year (tho by a Dobe not a Staff) I can sympathise,it does unfortunately affect the dogs more than you think too,our lot are now extremely wary still and can in some instances seem to even instigate arguments! :( I think their views are "get in there first!" At least you were quick-minded enough to make contact with the dog, which was the difference between your dogs being attacked and the Staff p*ssing off!!!

Well at least one good thing has come of this (the owner being spoken to and the dog being kept on a lead) and the police did their job. ;)

Lets hope the owner keeps up her side of the bargain in the future!!!

Thats a terrible story poor little staff!!! but i think its important to clarify that we are talking about dogs such as staffs, bulldogs, rottweilers etc etc owned by irresponsible people that treated in the wrong way can be lethal, but yes i know some little staffies that would'nt hurt a fly

i realise we are talking about staffs etc, but there are other dogs out there who have crap owners as well
